Postdoctoral Fellow – Neurobiology of Parkinson’s Disease – University of Calgary

A postdoctoral position in the neurobiology of Parkinson’s disease is available in the laboratory of Dr. Scott Ryan at the University of Calgary. The Ryan Lab investigates Parkinson’s disease using cutting-edge patient-derived stem cell models (2D and 3D), alongside animal models infused with toxic oligomers. This project will explore how alpha-synuclein fibrils drive cellular pathology, with a particular focus on whether distinct amyloid structural strains drive unique patterns of neural dysfunction.

As part of our multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will integrate stem cell technology with advanced biophysical approaches to examine the effects of pathogenic fibrils on synaptic architecture, endosomal trafficking, autophagy, and nuclear function. Our overarching goal is to identify the molecular mechanisms that accelerate disease progression and leverage this knowledge toward therapeutic development.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Working closely with JMIR Publications staff, a successful Editor-in-Chief candidate will lead this innovative journal in promoting open science through partnerships between progressive academic institutions, peer review services, and the scientific community.   • Leads the journal team towards achieving the priorities and objectives for the journal

Position Overview

The Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences and the Edwin S. Research Focus and Expertise

We are seeking an early career scientist with demonstrated potential to establish a robust, externally funded research program. The successful candidate will employ innovative molecular, cellular, and physiological approaches to investigate the regulation of cellular and whole-body metabolism, cardiovascular physiology, or hormonal control of homeostasis under normal conditions and how these processes become disrupted with age or in age-associated pathology. Research programs of interest may address mechanisms of impaired vascular or cardiac function, metabolic dysregulation in tissue and cells, altered nutrient sensing, or other cellular and hormonal processes that contribute to age-related decline in physiological resilience and homeostasis. Studies that seek to identify cellular determinants of health span, uncover early markers of dysfunction, or reveal targets for therapeutic intervention in age-associated diseases are welcome. Candidates whose research bridges fundamental discovery with translational relevance to aging and chronic disease will find a highly supportive and collaborative environment. The position aligns with departmental priorities in cardiovascular physiology, and metabolic regulation and dysregulation, and with ELCHA priorities on molecular and cellular mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases.

Reporting to the Head, Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop an internationally recognized research program in cellular and molecular physiology to understand dysregulation during aging.
  • Attract and manage external research funding to develop and support an innovative research program.
  • Mentor postdoctoral fellows, graduate, and undergraduate students.

Assistant Professor of Teaching in STEM Public Engagement – University of British Columbia

The Michael Smith Laboratories (MSL), in partnership with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (MBIM) in the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor of Teaching with an expected start date of no earlier than January 1, 2026, and an annual salary within the range of $110,000-130,000.

This recruitment marks a strategic expansion of our educational excellence. The successful candidate would join a team with deep educational leadership expertise within the combined MSL and MBIM, and receive mentoring and support towards career progression.

The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in the Michael Smith Laboratories (MSL) and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (MBIM), playing a pivotal role in advancing STEM pedagogy across both units. Within MSL, the candidate will contribute to the Advanced Molecular Biology Laboratory (AMBL), a central hub for scientific literacy and innovative science education programming. AMBL offers a broad range of initiatives, including molecular biology training for UBC students and external clients, extensive STEM outreach, and dynamic science communication projects. The candidate will be expected to enhance and expand these offerings by strengthening existing programs and launching new initiatives that align with AMBL’s mission.

As a member of MBIM, the candidate will contribute to undergraduate education through the teaching of microbiology and immunology courses. Additional responsibilities may include developing and coordinating tutorials, as well as integrating data science pedagogy into MBIM’s curriculum. Tenure-Track Position in molecular and/or developmental genetics at the University of Ottawa

The Department of Biology at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in molecular and/or developmental genetics, starting July 1, 2026. We seek candidates with expertise in classic and/or emerging invertebrate models or innovative cellular systems (e.g., organoids, 3D cultures). Research areas may include aging, regeneration, gene regulation, chromatin dynamics, development, metabolism, reproduction, disease pathogenesis, and stem cell biology.

 

The successful candidate will establish a dynamic, internationally recognized, and externally funded research program, contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, and mentor students within the interdisciplinary Biomedical Science (BIM) program.  Candidates must be able to teach in both English and French at the time of hiring.

 

The successful candidate will join an innovative and collaborative department of 40 researchers working in a wide range of fields, including cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, neurobiology and physiology. The Department maintains close collaborations with researchers at the University of Ottawa Brain and Mind Research Institute, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, the Ottawa Heart Institute, and Carleton University. Postdoctoral Fellow – Recombinant Spider Silk Protein Engineering For Biomedical Applications

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

This is a postdoctoral fellowship in the Rainey laboratory at Dalhousie University (http://structbio.biochem.dal.ca/jrainey/), working in collaboration with Dr. John Frampton (http://www.framptonlab.com/) and funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in collaboration with 3DBioFibR Inc. (https://3dbiofibr.com/). The Rainey lab has developed a variety of recombinant spider silks and processed these into fibres by hand-drawing (e.g., Xu et al. (2017) Biomacromolecules 18: 3678) and wet-spinning (e.g., Xu et al. (2019) Small 15: 1805294; Simmons et al. (2019) ACS Biomater Sci Eng 5: 4985; Ghimire et al. (2024) Mater Today Bio 26: 101073; Sulekha et a. (2025) Adv Funct Mater 35: 2420254) or into films (e.g., Baker et al. (2022) Adv Funct Mater 32: 22051778). The present project will expand silk protein functionality by evaluating the potential to engineer silk proteins for desired materials properties and apply 3DBioFibR’s contact drawing technology (https://3dbiofibr.com/our-platform/) to produce silks with different materials formulations. We are well-equipped for recombinant protein production and purification and for biophysical and materials characterization (CD, FTIR and fluorescence spectroscopy instruments; light scattering instrument; optical microscopy; atomic force microscopy; tensile testing; and, a newly installed solution- and solid-state 600 MHz NMR spectrometer). · PhD in biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biophysics, chemistry, materials science, physics, polymer science/engineering, or other field directly related to the project
· Demonstrated research excellence, as evidenced in first-authored publications and, ideally, receiving of competitive scholarships

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team

The Departments of Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of the basic, structural and functional study of infectious agents and antimicrobial resistance. This will be a joint appointment between the Department of Biochemistry (51%) and the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (49%). The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of 1 July 2026.

The successful candidate, upon formally accepting the offer of a full-time faculty position, may be nominated for a Canada Excellence Research Chair in Infectious Disease and Antimicrobial Resistance. The Canada Excellence Research Chairs Program is intended to support world‑class researchers and their teams in establishing ambitious research programs at Canadian universities. Nominees to the Canada Excellence Research Chairs opportunity will be internationally leading researchers whose proposed research program aligns with one or more of the Government of Canada’s Science, Technology and Innovation priority areas. Canada Excellence Research Chairs are appointed for eight years, with award values of either $1 million or $500,000 per year; these two award values recognize the varying costs of research within different disciplines.

The University of Toronto requires that applicants must have earned a PhD degree in biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology or another related/relevant area, with a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research, service, training, and teaching. Candidates will be expected to sustain and lead innovative research that will advance the global frontiers of knowledge in the field, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program, with a particular focus on the Canadian federal Tri-Agencies.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, evidence of  impact on the field and/or societal impact, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Candidates must also possess a strong demonstrated record of service to the research community (e.g., service on peer review committees, faculty recruitment committees, advisory committees) and a demonstrated record of attracting and mentoring a diverse group of students, trainees, and research personnel, and establishing an equitable and inclusive research environment. MSc/PhD position in Cell Biology – University of Manitoba

A position is open in the Logue Lab, Unverisity for Manitoba for an enthusiastic MSc/PhD student interested in cellular stress and the role that cell stress response pathways play in helping to maintain cell health. This project will extend our recently published findings https://www.nature.com/articles/s41419-024-06663-0 by investigating the signaling mechanisms that control the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR), understanding how communication between UPR mediators help to maintain cell health and when dysregulated contributes to the progression of diseases such as cancer.

The successful applicant will be offered training in a wide range of cell biology techniques including tissue culture, western blotting, qPCR, Crispr/Cas9, tetracycline inducible cell line generation and live cell imaging. The Logue Lab offers a supportive, welcoming and stimulating research environment. We are searching for individuals with exceptional promise to develop a vibrant, externally funded research program in any area of Cell Metabolism. While we encourage applications from candidates studying any aspect of cell metabolism that would complement and expand upon our existing departmental strengths, we are particularly interested in candidates who explore immunometabolism, metabolic rewiring in healthy and diseased states, metabolites as signaling molecules, and metabolism of the gut microbiome. The successful candidate will also show a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching.

The department has several areas of research strength encompassing immunology, bacteriology, virology, biochemistry of cancer, protein science, and biology of metals. This program is an opportunity for international researchers, including Canadian expatriates wishing to return to Canada, to lead a prestigious research program at the University of Lethbridge. The University of Lethbridge is seeking CERC candidates in the following priority areas that build on the unique strengths of the University of Lethbridge and southern Alberta landscapes, infrastructure, and research facilities.

Rural and Regional Maternal and Child Health
Research topics of interest will be aligned with the One Child Every Child CFREF program in which the University of Lethbridge is a key partner. Agriculture and Global Change

CERC recruitment uses a two-stage application process where interested applicants must first apply to an open job posting at the university. The University of Lethbridge will provide substantial support in the preparation and development of the program application including budget planning, proposal development and editing. Awarded Chairs are valued at either $500,000 or $1 million per year for a period of 8 years, including salaries and benefits for the Chairholder. Assistant Professor (Immunology) – University of Guelph

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Immunology. The anticipated start date for this appointment is July 1, 2025, or another mutually agreed-upon date in 2025.

This position is part of a strategic cluster hire in infection, immunity, and therapeutic innovation, which includes recent and upcoming recruitment of immunology, biochemistry, and teaching-focused faculty. These hires support the Department’s newly expanded undergraduate Microbiology and Immunology major and the development of course-based Master’s programs in Immunology, Vaccines, and Therapeutic Design.

We seek outstanding candidates whose research interests align with and complement the department’s strengths. Applicants in all areas of immunology will be considered, including, but not limited to, cellular immunology, vaccine development, immune evasion mechanisms, and host-pathogen interactions in chronic infections.   • Exhibit strong expertise in complementary approaches to cryo-EM, such as mechanistic characterization of biological systems, integration of computational techniques or use of correlative light-electron microscopy (CLEM);
  • Apply cryo-EM methods to study fundamental biological questions that are relevant to the research focus areas of the Center for Biomedical Innovation;
  • Demonstrate an ability to deliver high-quality university-level teaching;
  • Demonstrate potential to supervise graduate students;

Graduate student position – University of Manitoba

We are looking for a motivated graduate student interested in pursuing experimental cancer research work at the Master’s or PhD level.

The research project investigates the immune responses upon laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) of brain tumors.

The research project received funding from national, provincial, and industry sources and utilizes immunocompetent mouse models for laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) treatment in brain tumors. The project has already absorbed significant work to establish the LITT methodology in the PIs lab and they are the only research lab in Canada offering the LITT mouse methodology. We will determine the full immune responses to heat ablation of tumor cells in the brain over time. We also assess small molecule compounds with immunomodulatory function for their ability to synergize with LITT to improve tumor reduction and post-LITT outcomes.

The student will be trained to perform brain tumor xenografting in mouse brains and administer the unique mouse LITT treatments. They will monitor tumor growth and treatment response by small animal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They will also be trained in multiplex immunofluorescence techniques developed in the PIs lab to monitor spatiotemporal changes in cellular responses in the brain tumor microenvironment. Previous experience with animal work is an asset but is not essential to this work.

This research is positioned in an area with significant novel research potential, particularly for self-directed research at the PhD level, providing the flexibility in developing and implementing hypotheses, methodologies, and data analyses. In addition to the investigation of brain immune responses, potential research directions in this project expand to the investigation of systemic immune responses, inflammation, TME changes, abscopal effects or antigenicity/mutational burden.

The PI’s labs and this project offer the possibility to learn and utilize many different lab techniques, including IHC/IF, flow cytometry, ELISA, and cutting-edge technologies like spatial -omics analysis of LITT-treated brain tissues. The student has the opportunity to showcase their work at national and/or international conferences and will regularly present at meetings with our industry partners.
