The Frances Sharom Science Communication Award

This annual award is for any member of the CSMB, but submissions are especially encouraged from graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early career researchers.

Entries should include a cover letter (2 pages max) describing the nature of the communication, the target audience, the impact, and scale of reach (if known). Entries should demonstrate effective and impactful communication of molecular biosciences and related issues beyond the immediate CSMB community. The target audience for the work submitted for the award could be the general public, policy makers, parent groups, community groups, other media outlets, or others etc. Entries should be no longer than 4,000 words for text submissions or 30 minutes for multimedia submissions.

Examples of entries can include (but are not limited to) newspaper or magazine articles, TV or radio broadcasts, book chapters, websites, TikTok channels, YouTube docuseries, etc.

All entries should have been published, broadcast, printed, or posted between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024.

The award includes a $500 cash prize and reimbursement of travel to a maximum of $1000 towards attendance at the awards ceremony at the Annual Meeting (for 2024, this will be held in Manitoba, in May).

Nominations can be made by the creator (self-nomination) or by any other party (i.e. nominate a colleague). For entries with multiple authors/creators (i.e. a team), only a single author/creator will receive the travel reimbursement and the cash prize is to be split between all co-authors. Only one entry will be accepted per author/team.

Note: Members of the CSMB Board and committees (including at-large members) are not eligible for nomination for CSMB awards while they hold office.

Submissions will be judged by the CSMB Board on their ability to enhance the target audience’s understanding and appreciation of some aspect of molecular biosciences (broadly defined). Also, accessibility, impact, relevance to molecular biosciences, accuracy, and quality will be assessed. Hardcopies are not required.
