Call for nominations – Scholarly Awards offered by the Society

Regular Call for nominations – September 15 – January 15

(if January 15 falls on a weekend, the deadline is extended to the end of the next work day)

Each year the CSMB offers multiple Research and Student awards. Details of these awards are provided by clicking on the individual links indicated in the column at left. Some awards are offered in alternate years, but most are available every year. The CSMB invites nominations for these awards from its members and other interested parties, with results to be announced at our Annual Conference.

In recognition that excellence in science as defined for the CSMB Canadian Science Publishing (CSP) Senior Investigator Award often includes activities in outreach, community support and integrating the principles of EDI into science, the following changes have been made to our awards processes: Note that nominations of a single candidate can be made for both the CSMB CSP Senior Investigator Award and the CSMB Jeanne Manery Fisher Memorial Lecture Award. This is a new process that is currently unfamiliar to the community. Therefore, unless specifically stated that a nomination is for both awards, the Chair of the Nominations committee will contact nominators to ask permission for the consideration of nominees for the JMF Award in the CSP category prior to evaluation taking place. If the same nominee is selected as the top applicant for both the CSP and the JMF awards, the awardee must select the award of their preference and the next ranked candidate will be awarded the declined award.

The CSMB acknowledges the body of evidence that clearly demonstrates inherent and implicit bias in various aspects of awards processes (e.g. Witteman et al. 2019, The Lancet) and commits to ensuring that those evaluating awards fully understand bias and take it into account while considering all nominations.

While awardees need not be CSMB members, we particularly encourage nominations of CSMB members and invite non-CSMB members who receive awards to join.

Note: Members of the CSMB Board and committees (including at-large members) are not eligible for nomination for CSMB awards while they hold office.

Note: Awardees are typically invited to give a talk at the CSMB Annual Conference and submit a manuscript or review of their related work/career path for publication in the appropriate Canadian Science Publishing journal. Awardees will be reimbursed for travel, accommodation and registration at the conference according to standard Tri-Agency policies (e.g. economy flights, no alcohol etc.).
