The CSMB asked trainees to tell Canadians’ what basic research means to you – and they did.

2016 CSMB Video Challenge Winner
The CSMB is pleased to announce that Kaitlin Kharas is the winner of the 2016 Video Challenge for trainees.
“Basic research is important because increasing humanity’s understanding of how the world works equips us with the knowledge and tools necessary to develop innovative technologies and therapies.” – Kaitlin Kharas
Kaitlin Kharas is pursuing a M.Sc. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Her research in Dr. Marjorie Brand’s lab at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute focuses on hematopoietic stem cell differentiation and how deregulation of this process causes leukemia. Kaitlin, in collaboration with Amy Mullin, who is now pursuing her MHA at Dalhousie, developed this video as a science communication project for a 4th year Biochemistry course at the University of Ottawa.

2016 Contest rules:
1st prize | $500 plus a travel fellowship to the 2016 IUBMB conference in Vancouver, BC (July 17-21) |
2nd prize | $200 |
3rd prize | $100 |
The participant has to be a trainee (undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral fellow) and a CSMB member (membership is free for all trainees)
Each video should meet the following three criteria :
(i) There should be a clear message describing how breakthroughs in basic research have improved the well being of Canadians or have made commercialization possible.
(ii) The message should be understood by a non-scientific audience.
(iii) It should be no more than 3 minutes in length.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: March 15, 2016
To participate in the video challenge, follow these guidelines
1. Sign into YouTube;
2. Click the Upload button at the top of the page;
3. Before you start uploading the video, chose Public for the video privacy setting
4. Select the video you’d like to upload from your computer;
5. Make sure to use CSMBvideochallenge2016 as a tag so we can search for your video;
6. E-mail Logan Donaldson (logand@yorku.ca) to register your entry
7. By participating in the contest, you agree to allow CSMB to display your entry on its website and during promotional events
ANNOUNCEMENT OF PRIZES: mid-April, 2016
The videos will be judged by members of the CSMB Board: Logan Donaldson (faculty representative), Anastassia Voronova (postdoctoral fellow representative) and Mustapha Lhor (student representative). The winners will be contacted in April, 2016.
