Principal Investigator in Population Health Data Science (2 Positions)

 The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI) of Sinai Health, a University of Toronto affiliated research institute, is seeking two emerging leaders in the broad area of Population Health Data Science. The appointments will be for Full-Time Principal Investigators, rank equivalent to Assistant or Associate Professors. 

We seek applicants who will develop independent, outstanding and innovative Population Health Data Science research programs, with a specific focus on (i) Infectious diseases, such as communicable disease epidemiology, mathematical modelling, pathogen genomics and phylodynamics; or (ii) Population data linkage, including but not limited to development and application of innovative analytical approaches, such as machine learning algorithms for ecological, longitudinal, etiological, prognostic or comparative analysis, based on various data sources, e.g. electronic medical records, administrative and laboratory databases, and geospatial information linkable to environmental conditions at the provincial, national or international scale. The health topic areas can include but are not restricted to, perinatal/maternal-child health, cancers, cardiometabolic conditions, autoimmune diseases and other complex diseases. 

The successful candidate will join the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute whose faculty members are internationally renowned for their work in multiple area of cutting-edge research. The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute is committed to excellence in health research and the training of early career investigators. Within Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, the Prosserman Centre for Population Health Research includes a group of multi-disciplinary scientists focusing on quantitative research of complex diseases, including precision health and multi-omics integration based on large-scale cohorts and biobank data. The Institute provides a research-intensive environment with modern and innovative core facilities, including biobanking, next-gen sequencing, and a designated Research Trainee Centre. 

The Investigators will be cross-appointed at the University of Toronto in the academic departments best aligned with the candidate’s background and research topic. The investigator will be integrated into the large network of data scientists affiliated with the Data Sciences Institute at the University of Toronto and the greater Toronto research ecosystem. 

As part of the University of Toronto’s & Sinai Health’s implementation of its Canada Research Chairs Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Action Plan, an appropriately qualified individual may be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair. Nominees should be within ten years of receiving their highest degree. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. 

Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute research groups engage in productive collaborations with the larger University of Toronto community, as well as national and international networks. Education and Experience Requirements 

Candidates must hold a PhD, ScD or equivalent doctoral degrees, with postdoctoral experience and an established record of research accomplishment as demonstrated by outstanding publications, presentations at major international conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsement by referees. A track record of securing external funding is an asset. The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and lead an innovative, independent, and externally funded, research program of the highest international calibre.
