Faculty Position – Assistant Professor, Tenure Track
The BC Children Hospital Research Institute (BCCHRI) and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) seek to recruit an outstanding scientist for a full-tiume (1.0 FTE) position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track).
The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with a large and diverse community of basic scientists and clinicians. The BC Children Hospital Research Institute consists of over 300 Investigators (clinicians and scientists) forming a dynamic and highly collaborative research community that aims to improve the health of children and their families The Research Institute is located on the campus of the Children’s and Women’s Health Centre of BC (C&W), alongside two provincial, tertiary care teaching hospitals (BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital). BCCHRI has a number of specialized scientific core laboratory and clinical facilities that couple technical expertise and services with state-of-the-art equipment to facilitate health research. The successful applicant will be expected to provide academic and research leadership for the BCCHRI Analytical Core for Metabolomics and Nutrition (ACMaN), a 1200 sq. ft. state-of-the-art analytical facility dedicated to metabolic profiling. The Department of BMB consists of twenty research faculty members spanning all areas of biochemistry and molecular biology. It has a thriving undergraduate degree program and a graduate program with roughly eighty students across all UBC sites. Some of the research strengths in BMB include structural biology, host-pathogen interactions, and systems biology. Of specific relevance, there is considerable expertise in biomolecular NMR and mass spectrometry.
As a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) faculty member and a BCCHRI investigator, the successful applicant will be expected to develop a strong, externally-funded and internationally-competitive research program, supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, collaborate with other faculty members, actively participate in service to the Department, Research Institute, University, and academic/scientific community, and effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their field of expertise. Evidence of teaching excellence and an interest in innovative teaching methods is required. The research program is expected to focus on the development and application of metabolomics methods to the study of metabolic diseases with some link to childhood, including the potential integration of metabolomic approaches into precision healthcare. In addition, the research program should aim to undertake studies of metabolomics in concert with the microbiome and the metabolome and applications of metabolomics in drug discovery and development.
Candidates for this position must hold a PhD degree or an MD/PhD, awarded within the past 10 years, or equivalent with postdoctoral research experience. The candidate will have demonstrated clear evidence of potential to develop an independent research program in the area of metabolomics, advanced skills in the analysis and interpretation of high dimensional data, and strong teaching accomplishments.
The incumbent will report to the Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. All positions are subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Competitive start-up infrastructure development funds will be provided. The anticipated start date for this position is January 1, 2019, or a date to be mutually agree upon.
