CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR (TIER 2) in Inflammatory Mechanisms in Health and Disease – University of Manitoba

DEPARTMENT OF INTERNAL MEDICINE

MAX RADY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

POSITION NUMBER: 27282+27281

POSTING DATE: SEPTEMBER 3, 2020

The University of Manitoba invites applications for a Canada Research Chair Tier 2, a tenured or tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor, in the area of inflammation as relevant to human health and disease.

The Government of Canada has established the CRC program to enable Canadian universities to foster world class research excellence. The proposed CRC aligns with the University’s strategic research plan that identifies ‘Fundamental Research’ and ‘Integrative Research in Health and Well-Being’ as targeted areas.

The Chair will be a member of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Manitoba Centre for Proteomics and Systems Biology. The Centre provides a unique environment in which fundamental and clinician scientists use “omics” approaches to research areas including innate and adaptive immunity, immune aspects of arthritis, human renal transplantation, cell virus interactions, and separation sciences. The Centre offers a unique collaborative environment with the potential for the direct application of new approaches to the study of human biology and disease. There are excellent opportunities for collaboration with basic and clinical Departments in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (umanitoba.ca/medicine) and the University of Manitoba

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent research program examining host responses in acute or chronic inflammatory diseases. The research will employ integrative approaches to develop a systems-based understanding of process. This program should be relevant to but not necessarily limited to autoimmunity, transplantation, or infection. As a Chair holder, the candidate will be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers. A critical aspect of these expectations will be the provision of teaching and mentoring to colleagues and their trainees at the University.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. with several years of post-doctoral experience in the application of high content analysis of biological systems of potential biomedical relevance. They will have sustained academic productivity as demonstrated by publications and presentations. In addition, the candidate will have a superior record of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (taking into account different practices in the relevant field or discipline). Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

A Tier 2 CRC Nomination will be submitted soon after a successful candidate has been selected. Chairs are awarded by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat after a rigorous evaluation, and award decisions are expected in the fall. The appointment will be conditional on a successful Canada Research Chair nomination.

Applicants must be exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher since obtaining their terminal degree at the time of nomination. Tier 2 Chairs are valued at $100,000 per year for 5 years with an option to renew once. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) will have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Please contact the UM’s Office of Research Services (researchgrants@umanitoba.ca) office for more information (www.umanitoba.ca/research/ors/).

The University acknowledges the potential impact that Career Interruptions and Personal Circumstances can have on an applicant’s record of research achievement. We encourage applicants to explain the impact of any such interruption(s) in their submission. Measures will be taken to ensure that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the evaluation process. The CRC Nomination Selection Committee will receive equity training that includes instruction on how to recognize and combat unconscious, implicit, overt, prejudicial and other kinds of bias. The Canada Research Chairs website also provides full program information including details on eligibility criteria at: www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/nomination-mise_en_candidature-eng.aspx

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
