Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) in Experimental Structural Biochemistry – University of Calgary

The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the area of Experimental Structural Biochemistry, with a start date of July 1, 2021. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track).

The Department has a long history of strength in structural biology, and our extensive instrumentation resources would position the successful candidate to sustain a research program in this area. The successful candidate will build on the existing strengths of our structural biochemistry group with access to a suite of world-class instrumentation. The candidate is expected to utilize or to develop advanced techniques in structural biochemistry and to apply them to understand molecular mechanisms, including (but not limited to) the analysis of macromolecular structures involving proteins, nucleic acids, lipids or carbohydrates, biomolecular recognition phenomena or macromolecular assembly at the molecular or supramolecular level. We invite applicants working on the structural biology of processes in any kingdom of life. The Department houses several facilities that have state-of-the-art analytical tools for advanced mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and other biophysical investigations, and provides the potential to collaborate with the established Centre for Molecular Simulation that has significant in-house resources available for high-performance computing and biomolecular visualization. The existing strengths in life-science research in the Department include membrane biochemistry, structural biochemistry of metabolic processes in bacteria, plants and animals, applications of biochemical techniques to understanding fundamental mechanisms of health and diseases (metabolic diseases, cancer, cardiovascular, neurology and immunology) as well as drug discovery. Programs could include emerging trends in structural biology such as integrative structural biology, cryo-electron microscopy, structural mass spectrometry, as well as established NMR and X-ray approaches.

The applicant is expected to establish a vibrant and internationally recognized research program in the broadly defined area of structural biology of living phenomena, as well as assist in the education of our large number of undergraduate and graduate students in biochemistry. The successful candidate will assist in meeting the institutional goals outlined in the recently developed “Growth Through Focus” strategy and in the strategic research plan of the Faculty of Science. “Growth Through Focus” is built around three big ideas that will differentiate our entrepreneurial university and drive growth: transdisciplinary scholarship, integration with our community and future-focused delivery of programs that will see us expand the flexibility and customizability of the UCalgary experience. Candidates must possess a PhD or M.D. (or equivalent science degree) in a relevant discipline such as biochemistry, chemistry, molecular or cellular biophysics, cellular biology or molecular biology, and relevant postdoctoral experience. Applicants must have a strong publication record demonstrating excellence in structural biology and its application to macromolecular structure. Prior success in obtaining peer-reviewed funding is an asset.

Candidates should also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning as evidenced by established successes and the use of contemporary approaches to teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in service, as appropriate.
